On January the 11th-12th the FOMS (foundations of open media software) conference will take place in Sydney Australia with linux.conf.au taking place the next week. Open media hackers will get together and discuss the future of open media. from the site:
The aim of the FOMS meeting is get the right people together to take the next steps in open media software. Meet and discuss your plans for the next 12 months with other developers and forge relationships to unwind the kinks, making open media kick ever more ass.
This should be an interesting gathering and an opportunity to plan & strategize how to maximize the adoption of open media, software, platforms and codecs throughout the internet. Or to borrow a phrase, its time for open media to kick ass and chew bubble gum & we all out of bubble gum.

We share how to work with free and open content repositories such as archive.org & metavid. We look at methods of subverting proprietary content sources, for critical use. We will look at free and open source systems for video editing and discuss methods for online collaborative media production. And finally look at systems of online distribution. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptops if they have them.
Update: Here is an outline of Open Media as discussed in the first meeting.

The metavid contribution to the danm.01(.alpha.unstable-branch.. hehe) show that opens this week will be highlighting user-built sequences. Users are highly encouraged to throw together collections of clips to help us have something to show :).
A sequence is essentially a collection of clips. if you are logged in to bleeding edge bleeding edge interface and you have a video clip open, you should see a ‘ADD TO SEQUENCE’ button, this will let you create (and link externally to) your sequence.
We imagine that this will be useful for building thematic montages, or people using the same word, or perhaps showing a speaker contradicting himself.
Keep an eye on Building A Sequence in the wiki for documentation (and discussion) of how this works.
Update: Sequences are going through some renovation right now, but feel free to keep track of your favorite clips in the wiki.
Update2:Â Sequences can be built with drag and drop goodness.. Watch for a more detailed post and update of metavid happening in a few days

Aphid and Michael will give a short talk about metavid at the graduate research symposium here on the UCSC campus. We should also have a poster available for people to check out. Event Summary:
The Division of Graduate Studies, along with University Relations, the Deans of the Academic Divisions, and the Graduate Student Association, is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Graduate Research Symposium. This event will take place on Friday, May 5, 2006, from 3-5 pm, with a reception immediately following. The event this year will take place at University Center, and we are excited that it will be bigger, more all-inclusive, and more vibrant than our first gathering. If you were part of last year’s event, you may recall the excitement and energy associated with it.
